Hydraulic Press Tonnage: Inputs for Engineering Review

Why maximum tonnage alone is not enough when reviewing a hydraulic press proposal.

Tonnage is often the first number buyers ask for, but it is not the whole specification. The useful question is whether the selected press can deliver the required force within the workpiece, tooling, stroke and cycle assumptions.

Where this helps

Best when the material and operation are known, but the force range still needs engineering review.

What to check

  • Share the part drawing, material and forming or pressing operation before asking for a force recommendation.
  • Confirm whether the stated force is peak force, working force or a range that depends on stroke position.
  • Review bed size, daylight, stroke and fixture space together with tonnage.
  • Leave a margin for engineering review instead of selecting a press only by catalog maximum force.

Inputs to prepare

  • Material, thickness, part size and process type.
  • Known force estimate, test data or similar machine reference.
  • Bed size, stroke, daylight and tooling assumptions.

A clear tonnage discussion reduces the chance of comparing two quotes that describe different machines.
